Todd Bodine, one of the sport's most preferred
relief drivers in recent years, makes his return to the Winston Cup
Series in 2001 as the replacement for WCS legend Darrell Waltrip in Haas
Carter Motorsports' Route 66/Big Kmart Fords.
Bodine, who drove in 2000 for Cicci-Welliver Racing
in the Busch Series, has driven no less than five races in each of the
last four years in the Winston Cup Series, for a variety of owners.
The native of Chemung, N.Y., who is the youngest of
three racing brothers, had a single top-10 finish in only five Winston
Cup starts in 2000, a seventh for owner Joe Falk at Atlanta. He finished
fourth in the Busch Series for the second straight season, with 2000
being his final campaign in his third tour with C-W.
Bodine won his first WCS Bud Pole in 1997 in his
hometown race at Watkins Glen International for Cicci-Welliver. His best
championship finish was 20th in 1994 while driving for Butch Mock, for
whom he scored his best career finish, third at Atlanta. He made his
Winston Cup debut for Mock in 1992 at Watkins Glen.
Bodine is a chassis specialist who got his start in
racing in Modifieds in Connecticut.
His best racing success came in the Busch Series,
where he finished second after an intense battle with good friend Randy
LaJoie. He finished third to LaJoie in 1996. He won the Busch Series
race in 2000 at Michigan, his 11th career victory. He gained his first
Busch Series victory in only his 22nd start, at Dover, Del.
He got his start in racing working as a child at
the family-owned Chemung Speedrome. At different times in his career he
worked for the Buck Baker Driving School and as a fabricator for various
race teams. |
