To the Petty Family and friends In memory of Adam Petty (July 10, 1980 - May 12, 2000) It seems, sometimes, that we have an endless supply of tears...but then, perhaps that’s why we were given children...to be sure that those ducts will remain active forever. God entrusts us with these tiny creatures who make us cry, tears of joy and sorrow, every single day of their lives. Though the shock of his passing grieves even those who did not know him, we must smile when we remember the tall, lanky stick figure, head bent down signing autographs, following people around the garage, asking questions, learning, racing, feet up, legs crossed finishing off a soda and burger. Sometimes he seemed oblivious to his own family legacy...it was just him and the car...giving all he could to get all there was. The fourth generation who had tasted victory, felt the rush, sought the goal and gone the distance. But family and the legacy of it all kept him close, kept him focused, made him know love and honor and sacrifice. Can’t you see him now, nestled between Neil and Davey, workin’ on yet another burger and chasin’ it back with a soda. All of them...legs crossed, feet up, watching the race, itching to be in the harness. There’s a hand resting on his shoulder...one marked by age and experience...this veteran has seen them come and go...the great grandfather of racing. Adam is home and he’s safe...in those choice box seats...surrounded by champions. Don’t you wish you could hear the conversation...and wouldn’t he be the first one to look up and say, "This is awesome!" |
